Cross-Curricular Pumpkin Fun

Cross-Curricular Pumpkin Fun!
Pumpkin SeedsOn Halloween the Cabell County Alternative Learning Center hosted a day of pumpkin fun and learning.  In science class, students began thinking about the correlation of the number of seeds in a pumpkin to mass, volume and circumference then created a hypothesis about which factor would have the closest relationship with the number of seeds.

In the math classroom, students practiced using the circumference, volume and surface area formulas to prepare for the activity.

In the afternoon, all the students gathered in groups in the cafeteria with their pumpkins.  The found their pumpkin's weight, circumference and radius then recorded the information on a large posterboard.  Then the fun began with scooping out and counting seeds.  That information was also recorded.  After clean up, groups traveled to classrooms to work with mathematical formulas such as volume and create graphs.  Then students analyzed the graphs to determine if their hypotheses were correct.

It was a very fun and educational day!
