At their meeting Monday, December 11, 2017, the West Virginia School Building Authority (SBA) approved Cabell County Schools’ proposal for the construction of a new Highlawn Elementary School.  The new facility will be built a short distance away from the existing school, on the site of the former Enslow Middle School.

“We are thrilled that the members of the School Building Authority have approved the Highlawn project,” says Ryan Saxe, Superintendent of Cabell County Schools.  “Not only will the new facility offer Highlawn students the same sort of positive learning environment students at other facilities are receiving; but this state-of-the-art school will also play a key role in the City of Huntington’s efforts to reconnect and revitalize the Highlawn neighborhood.”

The SBA matched Cabell County’s proposed local contribution of $6,618,539, allowing the district a total of $13,237,078 to demolish the existing Enslow building and to construct the new school.  The district will receive the funds over a two-year cycle, with $4,144,732 coming in the first year, and the remaining $2,473,807 the second year.

“We are very fortunate to be able to provide a match to the SBA funds we requested,” continues Superintendent Saxe.  “We were only able to offer that match because of the consistent support of our local voters and taxpayers.  I am just so thankful to the wonderful, giving people of this community.  Because of you, Cabell County Schools has some of the best facilities in the state.  The new Highlawn Elementary will simply further our mission of providing the very best, modern learning facilities for our children and community.”

“I am over-the-top ecstatic,” says Robin Harmon, Principal of Highlawn Elementary.  “We were dancing in the hallways when we heard the new school had been approved.  When I first announced the news over the intercom, everyone in the building started cheering.  I am just so happy for the children of Highlawn and our entire community.  I so appreciate that the Board and district administration have continued our vision and helped us make our dream come true.  The new school is going to offer state-of-the-art opportunities for students and will help open doors to the future for the Highlawn community.”
