Domestic Violence and Abuse Education

A Visit from BRANCHES and Contact

Domestic violence awareness is so important for people, no matter their sex, race, religion, economic status or sexual orientation.  On May 20, 2019, the students of the Cabell Alternative School learned about different aspects of domestic violence from 3 different workshops.

Kerri Thomas, a prevention educator with Contact Rape Crisis Center, hosted one workshop where students learned about the importance of consent.  They also participated in a fun and interactive candy game to apply the principle of consent.

Students traveled to Sara Blevins, BRANCHES Director of Development, who spoke about different scenarios and how to guard against abuse.

Whitley Nelson, Youth Services Coordinator and BRANCHES Shelter Manager, talked through a very informative PowerPoint which addressed information about physical, emotional/verbal, sexual, financial, digital, and stalking abuse.

Many students really appreciated the information and opened up about their own experiences with domestic abuse and violence.  This was a beneficial training for students.
