On March 10th the students and staff of the Alternative School had fun experiencing some unique combinations of healthy ingredients all mixed up in very tasty smoothies.  The students tasted “purple” and “green” without knowing the ingredients and rated the smoothies based on taste, texture, smell and overall opinion.  The students watched as Ms. Scott, principal, created a strawberry, orange juice and vanilla greek yogurt smoothie.  After all the ratings were complete, Mrs. Wood graphed the results.  Then the students guessed what was in the purple and green smoothies.  They were astounded to find out kale was one of the main ingredients in the green smoothie that several students really had liked.  Mrs. Baker shared an article about 21 benefits of healthy smoothies and finally the students were allowed to suggest unique smoothie combinations made out of the healthy ingredients.  It was a very successful wellness activity.

Strawberry Smoothie

8 ounces frozen strawberries

1 cup orange juice

6 ounces vanilla greek yogurt

 

Blueberry Smoothie

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 cup unsweetened almond milk

1/8-1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Ice to taste

 

Green Smoothie

½ cup frozen kale

½ cup pineapple

½ cup vanilla greek yogurt

¼ cup water
