Words of Inspiration

Woody Williams to Visit Cabell Alternative School
Woody WilliamsHershel Woodrow "Woody" Williams, a retiree of the United States Marine Corps, is the last brave man who was stationed at Iwo Jima and received the Congressional Medal of Honor from World War II due to his heroic actions during the Battle of Iwo Jima.

He visits our students each year and September 26, 2018 was our special day.  He spoke of the importance of one's name and of the responsibility of each student to decide what happens to that name.

Mr. Williams spoke of simple steps to accomplishing things.  Start with making your bed each day - then you accomplished something!

Mr. Williams shared two creeds which have helped him through this life.  One was given to him by his teacher from 1st through 8th grade who really shaped his character and taught him a deep love for his country. His greatly admired teacher required the following creed to be memorized and recited.

The American's Creed

I believe in the United States of America
as a Government of the People,
By the People,
For the People;
Whose just powers are derived
from the Consent of the Governed;
A Democracy in a Republic
A Sovereign Nation of Many Sovereign States;
A Perfect Union,
One and Inseparable;
Established upon those Principles of Freedom,
Equality,
Justice,
and Humanity
For which American Patriots
Sacrificed their lives and Fortunes.
I Therefore
Believe it is my duty to my Country
To Love It;
To Support its Constitution;
To Obey its Laws;
To Respect its Flag;
And to Defend it against all enemies.

Mr. Williams also shared the following creed in hopes of our students using each day for good.

CREED

This Is The Beginning Of A New Day.

God Has Given Me This Day To Use As I Will.

I Can Waste It Or Use It For Good.

What I Do Today Is Very Important.
Because I Am Exchanging A Day Of My Life For It.

When Tomorrow Comes, This Day Will Be Gone
Forever, Leaving Something In Its Place
I Have Traded For It.

I Want It To Be Gain, Not Loss.....
Good, Not Evil....
Success, Not Failure.....
In Order That I Shall Not Forget The Price
I Paid For It.
